Who still needs a web agency today?
Nowadays there are many ways to create a website for free or at least for little money. Companies face the question of whether they should use a website builder or an AI generator, or hire a web agency to create their professional company website.
To have a website created, in the simplest case you can register with one of the many website builders or use an AI tool that promises to build a complete website in just a few clicks and in seconds.
If you want a bit more control, you turn to the most well-known content management system (CMS): WordPress. If around 30% of all websites worldwide run on it, it can’t be that wrong – so the obvious assumption goes.
With a bit of basic technical understanding, the installation is doable. After that, activate a few plugins, choose a theme—often free—and the website is up and running. The boss’s son can take care of that. Or the niece of an acquaintance.
So why do you need an expensive web agency?
The answer is uncomfortable:
Creating a website is actually easy. Running a functioning website is not.
Because building it involves more than technology. And these are exactly the aspects that are regularly overlooked in such setups:
Lack of a strategic foundation
There is no solid target group analysis and no clear definition of what function the website is supposed to fulfill—sales, brand image, recruiting, or something else.
Blending of roles
Concept, design, content, technology, and decision-making lie with one person. Correctives are missing; assumptions remain untested.
No prioritization
Features are created based on gut feeling. A well-thought-out information architecture is missing.
Technical debt
The website is thrown together quickly, but it isn’t designed sustainably. Maintainability and extensibility play no role.
No clear person responsible for the website
The website runs on the side. Responsibilities are unclear. The result is stagnation.
The consequences
- The website generates no qualified inquiries
- looks unprofessional → loss of trust among prospects
- internal frustration (“we really should revamp our website…”)
- dependence on a single person
The problem isn’t a lack of skill, but a lack of structure.
How a website is planned in a structured way so that it delivers lasting success can be found here:
