Web design – the design process

The Web design process at lilac-media is clearly structured and user-centered. In four phases – Analysis, Concept, visual design and finalization – an individual design emerges that deliberately stands out from the crowd. No boilerplate, no ready-made themes. Christiane Schenke, a design graduate with over 20 years of experience and a graduate of Burg Giebichenstein, provides tailor-made solutions – whether for freelancers, startups, SMEs, or non-profit organizations.

Case study: Web design for a newly established family medicine practice

Situation & Goal

A family physician is starting a new practice. The goal of the website is to clearly and understandably guide patients through organizational processes – especially for appointments, prescriptions and referrals. The design should support the practice organization and relieve the practice team of work.

Lilac Media takes on the conception and design of a clear, user-friendly web design.

Phase 1: Design Analysis

At the outset, we defined together which tasks the website should fulfill for patients. The focus was on orientation, clarity, and reducing questions.

There was no corporate design. The client did not want a logo, but only mentioned the color palette Bordeaux, White and Silver-gray as well as a deliberately simple, clean appearance.

The content was prepared in a division of labor: the client provided short, concise texts, while Lilac Media took authentic photos on site at the practice.

Phase 2: Design Concept

Based on the analysis a design concept emerged that works without a logo and with very reduced text. A central design element was the choice of typography.

A wide, sans-serif font was used that creates visual presence even with little text and remains highly readable. The typography conveys stability and security – independent of the content.

Phase 3: Visual Design

The design follows a compact, calm layout with clear navigation. Bordeaux is intentionally used as the guiding color to highlight menu items and central calls to action.

The menu labels are deliberately action-oriented, so patients immediately recognize how to schedule appointments or address concerns. The content area is restrained to make information quick and distraction-free to understand.

Phase 4: Design Finalization & Handoff

After alignment with the family physician, the design was consistently applied to all page types and finalized. Each page received a thematically appropriate practice photo.

For the texts, reader-friendly layouts were developed that vary depending on content type. The final design prototype was handed over and forms the visual basis for further pages and content.

Web design questions you might be interested in

Was unterscheidet individuell gestaltete Homepage von Baukastensystem?
